Madeleine relives her life in the back seat of the cab driving her through Paris to a nursing home, with troubled chauffeur Charles as her confessor. Madeleine’s tale is rose-tinted at the start: she has a wartime romance with an American soldier, which produces a son. When he heads back to the US, she takes up with a man who resents her son and wants her to himself. Madeleine’s story wakes Charles from self-absorption over his increasing debt problems and the pair begin to develop a mutual respect and friendship that neither will forget.
